Your analytics choice

Optional Google Analytics stays off until you choose “Allow analytics.” Selecting “Use necessary only” lets you keep reading and use the newsletter form without optional analytics. You can reopen the choices here at any time.

Your choice applies to this site in the current browser. It is not a setting for every device or for other websites. The Privacy Notice explains the associated information and service providers.

Cookies and other browser storage

Cookies are small values that a browser can store and send with requests. Local storage keeps values for a website in that browser until they are changed or cleared. Session storage keeps values for a browser page session, which may include restoring a tab. This site uses these mechanisms for different purposes.

Remembering your privacy choice

The local-storage entry mindful-digest:analytics-consent records “granted” or “denied.” It contains no email address and has no automatic expiry set by this site. It remains until you change your choice or clear the site’s browser data. When browser storage is unavailable, the site remembers your choice only while the current page remains open; a later visit may ask again.

Restoring your reading position

Session storage remembers scroll positions for navigation history so that returning to a page can restore where you were reading. This supports navigation and operates independently of analytics. Its lifetime follows the browser’s page session.

Remembering an article for analytics

After you allow analytics, the session-storage entry mindful-digest:ga4-article-context can hold the most recently viewed article’s identifier and category. It helps relate an accepted newsletter request to that reading context in the same tab. It contains no email address or subscriber number, is not a complete browsing history, and follows the browser’s page-session lifetime.

Google Analytics cookies

Once you allow analytics, Google’s tag can set first-party cookies such as _ga to distinguish browsers and _ga_* to maintain session information. These identifiers help measure visits and usage over time.

Google documents a default lifetime of two years for these cookies. Actual expiry can be shorter because of browser limits or cookie settings. A cookie’s lifetime is separate from how long analytics reports or event data remain with Google. See Google’s explanation of Analytics cookies.

Our analytics events describe pages viewed and accepted newsletter requests. They do not include the submitted email address, Turnstile token, or subscriber record number. We do not use newsletter addresses to create advertising audiences.

Security checks

The newsletter form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to help distinguish people from automated abuse. The form activates the check after you focus the email field or try to submit. This security service is separate from optional analytics and can operate when you choose “Use necessary only.”

Turnstile normally supplies a one-time verification token, which our server checks with Cloudflare. A token is not the same as a persistent analytics cookie. Cloudflare may also use security cookies depending on its protection settings; for example, its optional cf_clearance cookie records a completed security check. Its availability and lifetime depend on the security configuration.

Cloudflare’s Turnstile Privacy Addendum describes the technical signals it processes, and its clearance documentation explains the distinction between tokens and security cookies. Blocking the verification service can prevent a newsletter signup from completing.

Changing or withdrawing permission

Use “Change analytics preference” above, then select “Use necessary only” to turn analytics off. This stops future measurement by this site’s Google tag and updates the saved choice. Open tabs in the same browser also respond to changes in that saved choice.

Withdrawing permission triggers a best-effort deletion of this site’s Google Analytics cookies named _ga and _ga_*. Browser controls may still be needed to remove cookies the site cannot clear. Withdrawal does not delete the article context already stored in the tab or information previously sent to Google. The stored article context is not sent while analytics is off. You can remove remaining cookies and browser storage through your browser’s site-data controls.

Clearing the saved privacy choice makes the site ask again, with analytics off until you allow it. Clearing browser data does not remove a newsletter signup from the database; contact details for questions about that record are in the Privacy Notice.

Browser controls and updates

Browser settings can block cookies or remove stored site data. Blocking third-party cookies alone may not block first-party analytics cookies. Private browsing may change how long data stays on your device, but it does not by itself prevent a service from receiving requests.

Blocking storage may stop your privacy preference or reading position from being remembered. Blocking security requests may prevent form verification. You can still choose necessary-only browsing using the control above.

We may update this notice when the site’s storage or services change. The date at the top shows the latest revision.
